Please join FLAG and Tom Sachs for a tournament featuring “Training,” 2016, a helicopter rescue game. The Sachs Studio Team finalists will compete to determine the champion.
Tom Sachs’s Training, 2016, is a dangerous 1970’s helicopter toy turned wall sculpture, which records 825 previous attempts by the artist and his studio to play the rescue game. Players must solve a riddle and then pilot a vintage Mattel ‘Vertibird’ helicopter toy to move the game pieces: a Kelly Bag, a bag of McDonald’s french fries, and an Apollo command module. Players compete for speed and accuracy and all scores and times are recorded on the game board. This event at FLAG will host the final attempts to play the game and will ultimately complete the work of art.
Sachs’s game board is included in FLAG’s 9th floor group exhibition Summer School, on view through August 12, 2016. This expansive exhibition highlights artists who ignite our imagination through fantasy, humor, and play, featuring John Baldessari, Gina Beavers, Dan Colen, Will Cotton, Jennifer Dalton, Tara Donovan, Awol Erizku, Tom Friedman, Genevieve Gaignard, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Mark Grotjahn, Alex Israel, Steven and William Ladd, Tony Matelli, Marilyn Minter, Vik Muniz, Charles Ray, Tim Rollins and K.O.S., Ugo Rondinone, Robert Therrien.
