In February 2019, The FLAG Art Foundation celebrates its first decade with a new book, including 50 exhibitions featuring 467 artists, and a range of curators from artists to museum directors to fashion designers to a professional athlete, to create shows that have presented a unique vision, different curatorial approaches, and a changing perspective on contemporary art and issues of our time.

The book tells the story of FLAG through a stunning visual chronology of the 10 years of exhibitions, unique poetry and writing contributions, reflections from many of the artists and curators on the process and meaning of their exhibitions, and an in-depth interview with Founder Glenn Fuhrman and Director Stephanie Roach on creating this experimental model that has shown some of the most exciting and relevant art.

With an emphasis is on curatorial vision, FLAG’s goal has been to provide a space for a diverse range of art and ideas of interest to the art community, from timely issues relating to social and political events to personal obsessions to new and rarely seen works by artists. Since FLAG’s inception, it has featured established and emerging local and international artists in two-person and group exhibitions, and has expanded its program to present artists’ major surveys as well as first solo shows in New York.

“The FLAG Art Foundation emanated from my passion for collecting contemporary art for more than 25 years, and the desire to share that joy in a new way,” stated Glenn Fuhrman. “It was my hope to collaborate with artists and curators to build a different style exhibition space, not based on my own collection, but one where we could honor their creative visions to present exhibitions that constantly engage the public in dynamic ways.”

Stephanie Roach, FLAG Director, said: “I have been honored to work alongside Glenn Fuhrman since 2006 to shape a new contemporary art organization, navigating uncharted territory with a combination of curiosity, enthusiasm, and adaptability. It has been incredibly rewarding to collaborate with so many brilliant people to bring their dynamic exhibitions and programs to to life and to share the transformative power of art.”
