On Tuesday, July 25, from 6-8pm, The FLAG Art Foundation will host a conversation between artist Fred Tomaselli and FLAG Founder Glenn Fuhrman. Tomaselli is included in the group exhibition The Times, on view on FLAG’s 9th floor gallery from June 1 – August 11, 2017. The New York Times serves as the point of departure for the exhibition, featuring over 80 artists, artist duos, and collectives who use the “paper of record” to address and reframe issues that impact our everyday lives.

Since 2005, Fred Tomaselli has inserted surreal, abstract collages and compositions onto editorial photographs featured on the covers of The New York Times. These Times-based artworks allow Tomaselli to “talk back” to the newspaper and respond to regional and global issues. In a 2010 review, art critic Ken Johnson wrote that these works “…suggest an undercurrent of craziness in the modern world. The contrast with the newspaper’s black-and-white columns of words invites meditation on alternate versions of reality: one sober, the other exuberantly irrational.”
